Social Skills Training: An Intervention for Adults with High-Functioning Autism Kathleen Richards Abstract Social skills training programs are often used as a behavioural intervention with elementary school-aged children; however, many students with high-functioning autism do not receive diagnoses until they reach adulthood. The treatment of social skills deficits remains one of the most challenging areas in meeting the needs of people with autism. Previous work automated the process of social skills training by developing a dialogue system that teaches social communication skills through interaction with a computer avatar. First, although it is never too early to help people with autism develop the adaptive, social, vocational and self-determination skills they will need in adult life, some of these skills may need to be relearned at key transition periods.
